COVID-19: Top 10 developments in India this Tuesday morning

The nationwide tally of COVID-19 cases in India crossed one lakh on Monday with Maharashtra registering over one-third of total infections.

Here are the top 10 developments in India this morning:

1. Total confirmed COVID-19 cases in India have risen to 1,01,139, according to the latest update from the Union Health Ministry. This number includes cases involving foreign nationals, patients who have recovered and the death toll.

2. The death toll in India due to the novel coronavirus pandemic has risen to 3,163, the Union Health Ministry has said.

3. The reported active COVID-19 cases in India now stand at 58,802, according to the Union Health Ministry.

4. As many as 39,174 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged so far, the Union Health Ministry has said in its latest update.

5. With 35,058 confirmed novel coronavirus cases, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, the state has reported 1,249 COVID-19 deaths so far. As many as 8,437 patients have recovered.

6. With 11,760 confirmed novel coronavirus cases, Tamil Nadu is now the second most-affected state in the country. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, the state has reported 81 COVID-19 deaths so far. As many as 4,406 patients have recovered.

7. With 11,745 confirmed novel coronavirus cases, Gujarat is now the third most-affected state in the country. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, the state has reported 694 COVID-19 deaths so far. As many as 4,804 patients have recovered.

8. The number of cases in Delhi has also crossed the 10,000-mark while the death toll has now reached 160.

9. Rajasthan also recorded 305 fresh COVID-19 cases and 7 deaths as of 9 pm. The total number of cases in the state is now at 5507, including 2151 active cases and 138 deaths.

10. Several states have ordered reopening of markets, local transport and even salons in areas that are considered safe from coronavirus

Earlier on Sunday, the Centre announced another extension of nationwide lockdown till May 31. India has been under lockdown since March 25, which was to end on April 14, but was later extended till May 3 then further till May 17.

However, a number of relaxations have been given in the current fourth phase, while states and union territories have also been granted significant flexibility for deciding the red, orange or green zones in terms of the quantum and severity of the virus spread.
