Amid the growing tension between the Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a picture, seemingly of People’s Liberation Army (PLA), is being shared on social media.
It is being claimed that it is a recent picture of PLA drills at LAC.
The caption of the picture reads: ‘In picture,#Chinese Army drills on LAC, they have also broadcast on their official broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) and State media outlets has repeatedly showcased this military exercise’.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the image to be old.
A Reverse Image Search of the picture led us to an article by South China Morning Post, dated January 1, 2019, featuring the same image.
SCMP credited the above picture to Xinhua News Agency. Taking a cue from that, we ran another Reverse Image Search using relevant keywords and found the original picture on the website of Xinhua. According to the picture caption, it was taken in 2018.
The picture description read: ‘Military personnel start training after Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, issued an order at a mobilization meeting held by the commission on Jan. 3, 2018. (Xinhua/Li Gang)’.
On further investigation, we found a report by Hindustan Times, dated June 08, 2020, stating that the PLA did carry out a large-scale drill to check preparedness at the border.
According to the report, Chinese media reported that a ‘largescale “manoeuvre operation” was done in the backdrop of the ongoing border standoff with India’. However, the picture being quoted above, wasn’t there.
From the above information, we can establish that the post in question is misleading as the picture in circulation is old.
