Fact Check: Mamata Banerjee’s Bandage Dressing Did Not Change From Left Leg To Right; Here’s The Truth

Date:

Days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suffered injuries, as a result of an alleged attack during election campaign in Nandigram on March 10, a collage of two pictures is being shared on social media with a claim that Banerjee’s bandage dressing shifted from her left leg to right leg, insinuating that she faked her leg injury.

A Facebook user shared the picture with a Hindi caption, “In Two days Bandage dressing changed from left to right leg”

Fact Check

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be fake.

Firstly, we cropped Mamata Banerjee’s image from the viral photograph and then ran a Reverse Image Search on that. This led us to an article by News 18, dated March 14, 2021, featuring Banerjee in a wheelchair.

In the picture, Mamata Banerjee was seen coming out in a wheelchair after being discharged from the  SSKM Hospital on March 12, 2021. She was admitted to the hospital on March 10, 2021 after being allegedly attacked in Nandigram.

As per the article, Chief Minister emerged in a wheelchair from the hospital, waved at her supporters and headed straight to her Kalighat house in the city. State Minister Firhad Hakim and CM’s Nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee were present while she was being discharged.

While comparing both the viral and original images, one can clearly see that the viral image has been flipped.

We also found a video on YouTube published by Republic World, in which she can be seen wearing the bandage on her left leg.

On putting the second picture through Reverse Image Search, we found a tweet by Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in which Mamata can be seen with a bandage on her left leg.

The picture was taken on March 10 in SSKM Hospital when Mamata Banerjee was allegedly attacked during a religious program at Nandigram.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the bandage in both the pictures was on her left leg. Therefore, the claim with the viral image is false.
