Fact Check: Old Video Of Karnataka CM Announcing COVID-19 Restrictions Shared As Recent

Date:

In the wake of rising Coronavirus cases in India, a video of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa announcing restrictions in the state is being shared on social media.

“From tomorrow Bangalore lockdown, malls, colleges, schools, weddings etc,” the Facebook post read.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.

We ran a keyword search and found that the video is from 2020. We found the same video on YouTube channel of NewsFirst Kannada dated March 13, 2020.

The same was also reported by CNN-News18 on March 13, 2020. “Karnataka CM Bans All Sporting Activities In State; Schools, Colleges, & Cinemas To Be Shut Down,” the title read.

This proves that the video in circulation is old.
However, we found recent reports stating that due to rise in cases, the Karnataka government has tightened rules and imposed fines to control the spread of COVID-19.
We also found reports dated March 26, 2021, stating that a negative RT-PCR report has been made mandatory from April 1 to enter Bengaluru from outside the state. The reports can be seen here, here and here.
We also found a report published by Live Mint on March 26, 2021, stating that the state government has decided to ban public gatherings for upcoming festivals such as Holi, Ugadi, Shab-e-Barat and Good Friday across the state.
Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the post in circulation is misleading.
