Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and leader Azam Khan handed over their resignations from the Lower House of the Parliament to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The resignation comes in the backdrop of the recent assembly elections held in Uttar Pradesh where Akhilesh won the Karhal seat and Azam Khan won the Rampur Assembly seats. Both of them took the decision of retaining their seats in a bid to give a boost to the groundwork of the party in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the sources, Akhilesh is planning to play the role of Leader of Opposition in the UP Assembly for the upcoming term. However, Azam Khan is currently in jail after the UP government slapped several cases against him in connection to land grabbing.
In the recent election, the Akhilesh-led Samajwadi Party fell short and was seated at number two in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections securing a total of 111 constituencies. However, the numbers did increase from 47 in 2017 and secured a total of 32.06% vote share.
