Fact Check: Old Video Of Sikh Groups Clashing Shared With False Claim

Date:

A video of Sikhs fighting with swords and sticks is being widely shared on social media platforms with a claim that this is the situation in Punjab post Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) victory in the recent assembly elections.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a Hindi caption, “आज का हाल देख लो पंजाब का, ख़ालिस्तान का षड्यंत्र शुरू हो गया, देशद्रोही केजरीवाल की पार्टी के सत्ता में आते ही। कश्मीर की तरह पंजाब भी मोदी जी ही शांत कर पाएँगे।”

(English translation: See today’s condition of Punjab, the conspiracy of Khalistan has started, as soon as the traitor Kejriwal’s party comes to power. Like Kashmir, Punjab will not be able to calm down)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to a news report published by Jagran on June 7, 2014, which carried a screengrab from the viral video. According to the report, “On the 30th anniversary of Operation Blue Star, Amritsar, the Guru’s city remained closed, bloodshed in the Golden Temple complex. The controversy started while speaking at an event organized at Akal Takht Sahib which soon escalated into a violent confrontation. During this, swords, kirpans and sticks hit each other fiercely. 12 people have been injured in the incident. A seven-year-old child also suffered a wound. The situation is now under control. The Jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Gurbachan Singh has blamed inflammatory elements for the incident.”

Taking a cue from this, we did a keyword search and found that the same incident was reported by BBC News on June 6, 2014. The video description read, “Sikh groups wielding ceremonial swords have clashed in the Golden Temple in Amritsar in northern India. Several people were injured as rival factions fought after the leader of one Sikh group was reportedly prevented from speaking.”

The same incident was reported by The Indian Express and The Guardian in June 2014 as well.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an eight-year-old video is being falsely shared with a misleading claim.
