The Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD), often known as Tomato fever, has raised concerns among medical professionals due to its rapid spread among children. Red-colored rashes, skin irritation, and dehydration are some of the disease’s symptoms, which are similar to those of monkeypox.
A report published in the Lancet Respiratory Journal has now warned of the fast-increasing cases of HFMD among children in India, even though the fact that Covid-19 has not let go of its hold on Indian citizens and that the dagger known as Monkeypox also hangs low.
Doctors have expressed concern over the rise in tomato fever cases among children in India. The first instance of ‘tomato fever’ was recorded in Kerala’s Kollam on May 6, according to Lancet Respiratory Journal. There are now 82 children under 5 that have the current infection.
“Just as we are dealing with the probable emergence of the fourth wave of Covid-19, a new virus known as tomato flu, or tomato fever, has emerged in India in the state of Kerala in children younger than 5 years,” Lancet said in its report.
What are the symptoms of Tomato Fever?
Apart from rashes and skin irritations, here are some common symptoms of the viral disease that have been observed –
- High fever
- Body ache
- Joint swelling
- Dehydration
- Fatigue
- Body rash
What are the causes of Tomato Fever?
According to medical professionals, it is a self-limiting condition for which no specific medication and treatment is available. They also cautioned that the virus is “very contagious” in a statement to the journal.
In adults, the infectious condition is uncommon since their immune systems are often strong enough to protect them from the virus. It is brought on by intestinal viruses.
Is Tomato Fever contagious?
Tomato fever or Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD) is highly contagious and spreads through contact. So far, no vaccine is available for the virus.
If someone is infected, then they must remain in isolation. Utensils, clothes, and other items used by the infected persons must be sanitized to prevent the flu from spreading. Precautions as Covid19 are recommended.
26 children (aged 1-9 years) have been reported as having the disease in Odisha by the Regional Medical Research Centre in Bhubaneswar.
As of now, apart from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, no other regions in India have been affected by the virus.
