A video of people throwing stones at a truck’s loudspeakers and lights during an idol immersion procession has gone viral on social media with a claim that this is how Hindus were attacked during a Durga Puja immersion ceremony in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.
The video is being shared on Facebook with a caption, “बिलासपुर सदर बाजार की सड़क से माँ दुर्गा विसर्जन करने जा रहे हिन्दुओ पर तलवार लाठी डंडे रॉड से हमला माँ दुर्गा के मूर्ति पर हमला हिन्दुओ पर पत्थरबाजी आधे घण्टे तक बीच सड़क पर आतंक का तांडव होता रहा”
(English translation: Attack on Hindus going to immersion Maa Durga from the road of Bilaspur Sadar Bazar with sword sticks, sticks, rod attack on the statue of Mother Durga, stone pelting on Hindus. For half an hour, terrorism was happening on the road)

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords. This search directed us to a news report by ANI which carried a screengrab similar to the viral video on October 7, 2022. According to the report, “A clash between two groups going to perform ‘Durga Visarjan’ after two days of ‘Vijayadashmi’ occurred in the Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh on Friday. The groups were a part of tableaus of two different Durga Pandal committees, officials said.” The report nowhere mentions any communal angle.
ANI also tweeted the same video from its Twitter handle on October 7, 2022, with the caption, “Clash broke out between 2 groups during Goddess Durga idol immersion in Sadar Bazar, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.” It also carried the byte of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rajendra Jaiswal stating, “Scuffle broke out between members of 2 Durga puja committees over which party would go for immersion first. Suspects are in police custody, interrogation is going on. Action will be taken against the accused.”

The same incident was also reported by many other news outlets including Times Now, News 18 and The Print. None of the reports mentioned Hindus were being attacked.
