Fact Check: 2017 Post of Indians Breaking TVs After the Loss Against Pak Viral with False Claims

Date:

India lost to England in the Semi-final of the recently concluded T20I Cricket World Cup by 10 wickets. Against this backdrop, a viral picture showing a policeman standing next to broken TVs is doing the rounds on social media. Users are claiming that the Indian team fans broke their TVs and mobiles after the loss against England.

A Facebook user posted the viral picture with a caption: ওপার থেকে টিভি ভাঙ্গার আওয়াজে থাকা যাচ্ছে না……… এখন পর্যন্ত ৪২,৮৯৩ টি টিভি ও ১,৯৪,৫৩১ টি মোবাইল  ভাঙ্গার খবর পাওয়া গেছে সূত্র ঃ- আনন্দবাজার পত্রিকা (English translation: Can’t stand the sound of breaking TV from the other side……… So far, 42,893 TVs and 1,94,531 mobiles have been broken Source :- Anandabazar Patrika)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Considering that the users have cited their source of information to be Anandabazar Patrika an Indian Bengali-language daily newspaper, we checked the official website of the media network to verify the claims. We could not find any news related to the Indian fans breaking their TVs and mobiles after the loss.

Checking the authenticity of the viral image, we found a tweet from June 18, 2017, published on the official account of Bombay Times.

One of the images in the tweet match exactly with the viral image and its caption informs that they are from Ahmedabad where people broke their TV sets after the Indian team’s defeat by Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final in 2017.

Searching about the image further we came across a Facebook post published on the official handle of Entertainment Times (ETimes) on June 18, 2017.  Here too, one of the images matches the viral image, and according to its caption, the scenes are from Ahmedabad after India’s loss to Pakistan.

The same image had been published online on the website of the Pakistan media house Times of Islamabad on June 19, 2017, claiming the same as in ETimes and Bombay Times

We could not find a single credible news source claiming that TV sets and mobile phones were broken recently after India’s match in the T20I Cricket World Cup. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image, claiming 42,893 TVs and 1,94,531 mobiles were broken recently, is false.
