Joshimath Land Subsidence: State Govt Provides Interim Relief To People Affected, Top Updates

Joshimath: As the land continues to sink and several structures are marked as dangerous to “ live in ”, the Uttarakhand Government has decided to compensate the owners whose establishment will be demolished, based on the market value.

Situated in an area that saw a steep rise in construction in the past decades, Joshimath is a small town located in the foothills of Uttarakhand. Residents of the place have been protesting regarding the concern of the land sinking.

A group of experts has alerted authorities over the past few years as the land is overburdened by the increase in construction activities leading to ground subsidence. It occurs due to the gradual sinking or sudden settling of the earth’s surface caused by the removal or relocation of subsurface components.

  • The state government has announced an interim relief of ₹1.5 lakh to the families who have been relocated to safer locations.
  • The Secretary to CM announced that “Apart from the two hotel buildings (Malari Inn and Mount View Hotel) which are marked ‘unsafe’, no other building is being demolished.”
  • Cracks have appeared in 723 buildings, affecting 131 families who have been shifted to safer locations.
  • The district magistrate added that a central team will survey the damage to properties and suggest a way forward while coordinating with the local administration in relief efforts.
  • The Secretary added that “A good thing is that water leakage near Jaypee Company is decreasing and it reached 250 LPM last evening. After January 7 no new cracks have developed and the old cracks have not increased.”
