After Argentina’s historic win at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a video of former US President Barack Obama saying that Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all time is widely shared on social media. Many users claim that Obama is putting an end to Messi vs Ronaldo debate.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Obama on Messi VS Ronaldo”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we found the verified YouTube channel of ‘60 Minutes’ that carries the extended version of the viral clip, dated November 16, 2020, with a caption, “Barack Obama: The 2020 60 Minutes interview.” But in the entire video, we could not find anything related to Messi or Ronaldo.

This 2020 interview is also available on CBS News Online. In the interview, topics such as politics, President Trump, George Floyd and books are discussed. It does not mention Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi.

After Argentina won the World Cup, Obama tweeted congratulating the team. Messi has been described as the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) in it.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an edited clip is falsely shared as Barack Obama calling Messi a GOAT in the viral video.
