Tehran: An Iranian court sentenced a couple to 10 and a half years in prison after they shared a video of them dancing at Tehran’s main square surfaced online.
In the video, the Iranian couple, identified as Astiyazh Haghighi, 21, and Amir Mohammad Ahmadi, 22, was seen dancing in Azadi Square. Haghighi was seen not wearing a headscarf in the viral video, defying the strict law against women not dancing in public.

According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) both a court in Tehran sentenced them each to 10 years and six months in prison, with bans on using the internet and leaving Iran.
According to a CNN report, security agents first searched the house of the couple on October 30 and further brought them in for questioning. They were transferred to prison post-questioning.
According to HRANA, Haghighi was initially kept in Ward 209 of the Evin Prison followed by a transfer to women’s prison at Qarchak.
The report further claimed that the couple were refused access to legal counsel. The couple was accused of “spreading corruption and vice” and “assembly and collusion with the intention of disrupting national security.”
