New Delhi: During the second session of the G20 Foreign Minister’s Meeting in New Delhi, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reportedly had a brief meeting with Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, pressing him on the issue of Ukraine making it the highest-level one-on-one contact since the war.
According to an AFP report, the meeting was for less than 10 minutes between the two ministers on the sidelines of the ongoing talks.
The report further added that the US wanted to “disabuse the Russians of any notion that our support might be wavering” on Ukraine, the official said, after growing support from European allies for peace initiatives.
Blinken urged Russia to engage with Ukraine on the basis of demands put forward by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to reports quoting a US official added that “We always remain hopeful that the Russians will reverse their decision and be prepared to engage in a diplomatic process that can lead to a just and durable peace,”.
The official further added that Blinken told Lavrov that “the treaty is in the interest of both our countries as well as international security, as the world expects us to behave responsibly when it comes to nuclear security.”
Meanwhile, Russian spokesperson Maria Zarkhova reportedly said, “US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked for ‘contact’ with Foreign Minister Lavrov, during the second session of G20 meet they had ‘contact’, there were no talks or full fledged meeting.”
