‘We Will Wait…’: CEC Rajiv Kumar On Bypoll Date For Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad Seat

Date:

New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Wednesday did not announce the by-election dates for the Wayanad parliamentary constituency, which became vacant after the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Speaking to reporters, Rajiv Kumar said, “We have six months’ time to hold a by-election after a seat falls vacant. The trial court has given 30 days time for judicial remedy. So, we will wait.”

As per the Representation of People Act, 1951, by-elections need to be held within six months of any vacancy. According to sources, Congress was prepared to contest in court if the Election Commission had announced dates for the by-election.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as MP from Lok Sabha on March 24, following his conviction by the Surat court in a criminal defamation case for the ‘Modi surname’ remark.

The CEC has announced the schedule for the Karnataka Assembly election. The polling would take place in a single phase on May 10 and counting on May 13.
