Fact Check: Can Sugar-Free Diet, Drinking Hot Lemon Water And Organic Coconut Oil Cure Cancer? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A post claiming that one Doctor Gupta has suggested a diet to cure cancer is widely shared on social media.

The post reads: “Cancer is not the disease… Dr Gupta says, no one should die of cancer except without care.

(1) The first step is to stop all sugar intake, without sugar in your body, the cancer cells die naturally.

(2) The second step is to mix the lemon fruit with a cup of hot water and drink it for 1-3 months. The first thing before food and cancer disappear, according to research from the Maryland School of Medicine, is 1,000 times better than chemotherapy.

(3) The third step is to drink three tablespoons of organic coconut oil, morning and night and the cancer will disappear, you can choose any of the two treatments after avoiding sugar. Ignorance is not an excuse. I’ve shared this information for more than five years.

Let everyone around you know, that it is a desecration of what is destined for anyone who dies this day from cancer.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search for the image of “Dr Gupta” used in the viral post, we found the results were only related to the post itself. Searching for “Maryland College of Medicine” only yielded results related to the University of Maryland in Baltimore, US. This institution was initially established as the Maryland College of Medicine in 1807, but was later rechartered in 1812 as the University of Maryland. The university is home to a school of medicine that includes a centre for cancer research.

Can avoiding sugar intake lead to the death of cancer cells?

Searching on Google, we found an article by Cancer Research UK stating: “There’s no evidence that following a “sugar-free” diet lowers the risk of getting cancer, or boosts the chances of surviving if you are diagnosed.” According to an interview with ABC News, Professor Sanchia Aranda, CEO of Cancer Council Australia, suggests: “Stopping sugar getting to cancer cells would also mean that your body’s healthy cells get starved of necessary sugar. I think that would make you lose weight, [and] would make your immune system less efficient and more likely that cancer would progress.”

According to another article in Asian Scientist, a group of scientists from Singapore and Austria conducted research indicating that sugar starvation could lead to the death of some cancer cells under certain conditions of elevated calcium. However, the study is still in its early stages, and the team plans to conduct further research in order to develop a new cancer treatment in the future.

Also, Dr Aditi Chaturvedi, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncologist and Breast Surgeon of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket and Gurugram, says: “Excess sugar intake can lead to weight gain and obesity, which increases the risk of a variety of cancers such as breast, colorectal, uterus, etc. However, there is no evidence that a zero-sugar diet protects you from cancer: moderation is the key.”

Can drinking hot lemon water and organic coconut oil prevent/cure cancer?

Searching for information related to this claim, we found an article by National Centre for Health Research with a headline: “Do Lemons Prevent Cancer?” According to the article, “The claims that “lemons are a proven remedy against cancer of all types” and “lemons are 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy” are certainly false.” Additionally, we came across a Snopes fact-check article from 2011 that rated the claim as false. Other articles debunking the viral claims can be seen here and here.

Speaking on the above viral statement, Dr Aditi says: “There is no relation between intake of hot lemon water or coconut oil and cancer.”

We were unable to find any credible research addressing this “Coconut oil cures cancer” claim on Internet. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, “Many of the health claims for coconut oil refer to research that used a special formulation of coconut oil made of 100% medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), not the commercial coconut oil most available on supermarket shelves.” Even if some research claims that coconut can cure cancer, it’s important to note that these studies may not be based on the coconut oil that is commonly available in the market for consumers.

Making an overall statement on the viral post, Dr Aditi Chaturvedi said: “All these are false claims.”

Thus, it is confirmed that cancer cannot be cured with a sugar-free diet, drinking hot lemon water, and organic coconut oil. Therefore, the viral claim is false.
