Fact Check: Viral Image Of A Car Stuck In A Pothole Is From Lucknow, NOT Kerala

Date:

An image showing a car stuck in a big pothole on the road is widely shared on social media targeting the Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala for poor infrastructure.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ലോകനിലവാരത്തിലുള്ള തുരങ്കപാത പിണറായി വിജയനും റിയാസും നിർമ്മിക്കും എന്ന് കേട്ടപ്പോൾ ഇത്രയും.. പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചില്ല” (English version, below.)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Running a Reverse Image Search, NM team traced a report in Dainik Bhaskar, dated July 4, 2023, which carries the same viral image with a headline: “Road collapses in Lucknow, the car falls into a pit: Waterlogging increases the problem, plastic is being removed in the name of cleanliness”. According to the report, the incident took place in front of Balarampur Hospital in Lucknow. Several parts of Lucknow were inundated following heavy rains. When the unexpected water washed away the subsoil of the road, there was a big hole in the road.

Searching further, we found a video news report about this incident published on the official YouTube channel of Navbharat Times on July 4, 2023, with a title: “Roads Caves In After Rain In Lucknow: Such plight in just one rain?” The same incident was also reported by The Times of India.

The visual through the Google Street View of Balarampur Hospital in Lucknow matches with the place seen in the viral image.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral image of a car stuck in a pothole is from Lucknow, not Kerala.
