Fact Check: Old Image From Turkey Fictitiously Linked To Recent Morocco Earthquake

Date:

The earthquake that struck on September 8 in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountain range, measuring 6.8 on Richter scale, resulted in killing at least 2,122 people, and injuring over 2,400. Approximately 1,400 are in critical condition.

Against this backdrop, a set of two images is widely shared on social media linking it to the devastating Morocco earthquake. The first image shows a bunch of people sleeping on the streets, whereas the second image depicts a tilted building post-destruction.

The post is shared on Facebook with a caption: “632 people died and 329 injured by the earthquake in Morocco. Different sources report that the earthquake had a magnitude of about 7. It destroyed residential buildings and others, including those on the UNESCO Heritage list. My deepest condolences to all affected by this horrible tragedy”.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Doing a Reverse Image Search, our team spotted an article by India Today, dated February 9, 2023, carrying the image of the tilted building with a caption: “Aerial photo shows the destruction in Kahramanmaras, southern Turkey”. The report further states that the destruction caused in Turkey and Syria after a powerful earthquake in February 2023.

Another report from wgntv.com, featuring the same image, clarifies that it depicts the aftermath of an earthquake in Kahramanmaras, southern Turkey, which occurred on February 8, 2023.

Though we could not ascertain the exact time and location of the first image, it is evident that the second image is old and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Morocco.
