Fact Check: Visuals From Art Show Falsely Shared As French People Urinating On An African Child

Date:

A disturbing video is widely shared on social media, claiming that three French people urinating on an African child.

The video is shared on Facebook with the caption: “MACRON AND THE COUNTRY OF FRANCE THEIR RACISM IS ONE OF THEIR PEOPLE’S CULTURE, THEREFORE THEY WANT TO CREATE THEIR HATE IN THEIR CHILDREN, THIS IS IN FRANCE WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE BAD CULTURE THEY DO IN AFRICAN COUNTRIES As a reminder of the ugliness of the Franks: “This is the filth of France, the ugliest scandal of the twenty-first century!!! The inhuman and shocking scene of “two men and a woman” urinating on an African child, in one of the French villages, and the child, completely stripped of clothes, lying face down on the ground, while numbers of the French, whose country has always shocked the world with the sophistication of their civilisation, are watching this obscene, dirty, and abnormal act, without any sign of intervention from any of them!!! This was after the state of Mali expelled the French ambassador. The French arrested one of the Malians in a French village and urinated on him. Publicly: Africa must wake up and the Arabs and Muslims must wake up to see the true, ugly face of France. We regret the ugliness and horror of the scene, but where are the human rights advocates in this? It is unfortunate that globally Black Africans are associated with misfortune hence being segregated and used ritualistically”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Doing a Reverse Image Search of keyframes from the video, our team identified a GIF a website in 2014 with a caption: “Performance PIEDRA de REGINA JOSÉ GALINDO”.

Searching further, we found a blog by the Hemispheric Institute, a New York-based organisation, that serves as a hub for artists, writers, and learners dedicated to social justice. According to the blog, ‘Piedra,’ which translates to ‘stone’ in Spanish, was enacted on January 17, 2013, during the 8th Hemispheric Meeting of the Centre for Art and Politics Studies held in São Paulo, Brazil.

The blog identifies Regina José Galindo, a Guatemalan artist, as the creator of the performance, aligning with the visuals in the viral video. The piece juxtaposes a stone and a woman as symbols of endurance, highlighting the resilience of women in Brazil’s coal-mining industry. Galindo’s actions also shed light on the environmental and social challenges tied to coal mining. The performance concludes with Galindo walking past the audience, leaving them in contemplation.

Looking for Regina José Galindo’s website, we found similar photos uploaded with a poem titled ‘Stone’.

Thus, we can conclusively say that visuals from an art show are falsely shared as French people urinating on an African child.
