Fact Check: 2023 Turkey Building Collapse Video Falsely Shared As Recent Taiwan Earthquake

Date:

Amid the aftermath of a powerful earthquake striking Taiwan on April 3, 2024, claiming four lives and injuring over 60, with tsunami alerts issued in Japan and the Philippines, dramatic scenes emerged on social media. Videos captured buildings trembling, bridges swaying, and people seeking refuge. Among these, a video surfaced depicting a multi-story building collapsing during the recent Taiwan earthquake.

The Facebook post reads: ” The footage of a building that collapsed after #earthquake in Taiwan Alert for a tsunami has already been issued for the Miyakojima/Yaeyama region. #Taiwan#Earthquake#Tsunami#China#Hualien#Japan#Terremoto#Tsunami#TaiwanEarthquake.”

The above post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be false.

After conducting a reverse image search, we discovered identical visuals uploaded to Reuters’ official YouTube channel. The video was posted on February 6, 2023. Its description highlighted, “A dramatic video shows a building collapse in Turkey’s Sanliurfa province after a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck central Turkey and northwest Syria.”

We also found a BBC News report from 06, Feb 2023, stating that the footage was filmed in Turkey’s Haliliye district, where people were seen fleeing for safety as a building collapsed nearby during the earthquake. The report also mentioned ongoing rescue efforts in southern Turkey following the 7.8-magnitude quake.

Therefore, we can infer that a video from 2023 Turkey has been inaccurately circulated to depict a building collapse attributed to the recent earthquake in Taiwan.
