Jakarta: Union Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj attended the 60th anniversary of the Asia Africa conference that made a developing-world stand against colonialism and led to the Cold War era’s non-aligned movement.
Leaders of Asian and African nations called for a new global order that is open to emerging economic powers and leaves the “obsolete ideas” of Bretton Woods institutions in the past.
In 1955, the Asian-African Conference, a meeting of representatives of 29 African and Asian nations, was held at Bandung, Indonesia.
The conference ultimately led to the establishment of the Nonaligned Movement in 1961.While addressing the conference, Swaraj said the Asian and African countries should work together to combat the challenges of militancy, especially, threats from Islamic State.
She also urged for enhanced capacity building initiatives and development of education and skill in the nations of two continents.
The foreign minister also asked for improved maritime security. Meanwhile, Swaraj also called for joint efforts by Asia and Africa to develop United Nations Security Council.
