IPL COO Sundar Raman steps down

Date:

Indian Premier League (IPL) Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sundar Raman stepped down from his position on Tuesday. The ‘controversial’ cricket administrator’s resignation was accepted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and he is expected to end his association with the board on November 5.

New BCCI President Shashank Manohar, who replaced late Jagmohan Dalmiya recently, was unhappy with the Indian board’s call to continue with Raman despite the spot-fixing and betting scandal that hit the IPL in 2013.

“He should have resigned earlier, but this was the right thing to do,” Mukul Mudgal said. Raman is being currently investigated for the corruption scandal.

“Raman should have gone immediately after the Mudgal Committee report found him prima facie guilty of wrongdoings. He ought to have stepped down immediately at that time. Now, to restore the faith of people in IPL and the game, Raman needs to go,” Manohar was quoted as saying to Indian Express on July 19.

Raman has been the IPL’s COO since the league’s inaugural season in 2008. He was appointed in February that year by former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi.
