Why Smart City should be your address in India

Date:

PM Narendra Modi’s 100 ‘Smart Cities’ will make India smarter.

What is a Smart City?

It’s an urban region that is highly advanced in terms of overall infrastructure, sustainable real estate, communications and market viability.

How smart is it?

  • Information Technology rules the roost.
  • Not limited to automated sensor networks and data centres.
  • The government services, transport and traffic management, energy, healthcare, water and waste are all fully developed.
  • Data that is collected from sensors – electricity, gas, water, traffic and other government analytics – is compiled and integrated into a smart grid and then fed into computers that can focus on making the city as efficient as possible.

What makes it stand out?

  • Use of artificial intelligence and data analytics to make processes more efficient.
  • E-Governance and emphasis on citizen participation
  • An overlap between competitiveness, capital and sustainability
  • Efficient Public information, electronic service delivery, waste to energy, fuel and compost, 100% treatment of wastewater, smart meters, smart parking, traffic management system.
  • There will be a good grievance redressal.

The Number Game

  • 100 smart cities
  • The amount allocated to the project is Rs 7,060 crore, a little over Rs 70 crore per city.
  • More people to live in cities. As per reports, from 290 million in 2001, there will be 600 million Indians living in cities by 2030.
  • This number will swell to 400 million people to 814 million by 2050

Criteria

  • Eight cities with more than four million people have been identified and they will have a satellite smart city.
  • 45 cities with a population of one to four million people.
