More trouble in the offing for Salman Khan

Date:

New Delhi: The Salman Khan hit-and-run case of 2002 has taken a new turn with a revelation that Salman had no driving license to his name at the time of the accident.

The Sessions court hearing the case got a report of a statement of an RTO officer that a license was only issued in Salman’s name in 2004.

The statement was recorded by inspector Rajendra Kane of Bandra police station, who was handling the case on February 9. A detailed report of the statement has been submitted in the court.

Salman Khan’s lawyer was also provided with a copy of statement recorded.

The police will produce the RTO officer in the court as a witness for cross-examination.

The sessions court judge DW Deshpande had directed the police to record the statements of the RTO inspector and two police constables on the appeal of public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat. Their statements were not part of the charge sheet.

Khan’s car had rammed into a roadside shop in suburban Bandra, killing one person and injuring four people who were sleeping on the pavement on the night of September 28, 2002.

For years, his lawyers have argued that Khan was not driving the car. The prosecution alleges that he was, and has called at least two witnesses in the ongoing trial to prove that the actor was behind the wheel.

A hotel parking attendant told the court that he had seen Khan sit in the driver’s seat but had not seen him drive off and another witness testified last May, claiming that the actor had exited the car from the right side.

Khan is being tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If convicted, he could spend upto 10 years in prison.
