3 drug-peddlers held for selling Mephedrone

Thane: Three drug-peddlers, who allegedly sold Mephedrone drug to call centre employees, were arrested in Thane district, police said.

During interrogation, the three claimed that 60% of their customers were employees of call centres, senior inspector M V Dharmadhikari, head of Thane Crime Branch’s Anti-Narcotics Cell said.

Acting on a tip-off, Sayeed Sikander (21) and Mohammad Zahid (23) were nabbed from Rabodi area while Altaf Harun (32) was arrested from Mumbra on Wednesday, while they were allegedly trying to sell the drug, Dharmadhikari said.

Police seized 30 gms of Mephedrone powder costing around Rs 15,000 from their possession, he added.

During interrogation by the Anti-Narcotics Cell sleuths, Zahid and Sikander said they used to purchase the drug from Harun, who used to get it from a supplier in Mumbai, the police officer said.

Sikander and Zahid also told the police they used to sell the drug in packets of 1 gm each at various junctions and squares in Thane.

Thane Police has launched a drive to check sale of drugs near schools and colleges and are also planning to keep a watch on call centres.
