Teenager Cahill stuns Ding at UK Championship

Date:

Two-time former champion Ding Junhui of China crashed out of the UK Championship after losing 6-5 to 18-year-old James Cahill in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Cahill, the world number 100, cruised into a 5-1 lead in the third-round match at York’s Barbican Centre, only for Ding to fight back and take the contest to a deciding frame.

The world number three, UK champion in 2005 and 2009, had chances to complete an improbable comeback, but a mistake enabled Cahill to pounce and book a spot in the last 16.

Ronnie O’Sullivan had earlier taken his place in the next round, overcoming the discomfort of a broken ankle — sustained while jogging — to beat Ben Woollaston 6-2.

Asked about the condition of his ankle, which had caused him severe discomfort in his first two matches, O’Sullivan told the BBC: “It’s great.

“I couldn’t use it as an excuse today. Yeah, the first two matches I struggled, but today (Tuesday) I feel like I’m walking fine. I’ve new shoes.

“The others, I kept looking at them and thought they were horrible, but these are quite trendy.”

Defending champion Neil Robertson of Australia overcame Peter Ebdon 6-2.
