Indians high five for free Wi-Fi

New Delhi: Free Wi-Fi has become a must for travellers, including Indians, who consider this amenity as a standard service across all hotels, said a survey.

“Free Wi-Fi is a must for both business and leisure travellers, including Indians, as almost 53% of guests wish this amenity as a standard service across all hotels,” according to ‘Top Hotel Amenity’ survey by Hotels.com, an online accommodation booking website.

The survey is based on the responses of over 4,700 respondents globally.

Further, the survey revealed that Indians have become more tech-savvy with a large percentage of the population using smartphones and rely on the free hotel Wi-Fi.

Deprived of free public Wi-Fi hotspots compared to other countries, Indian business travellers appear to be more reliant on the free hotel Wi-Fi as it stood first on their priority list with 33%, it added.

For leisure travellers, free breakfast and free Wi-Fi top the amenities list with 33%, the survey said.

The number of mobile internet users is steadily increasing in India and is expected to reach 213 million by June 2015, according to a report released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International.

There were 173 million mobile internet users in India in December 2014.

While number of mobile Internet users in rural India are likely to grow to 53 million by June 2015, urban India will continue to account for the larger percentage with 160 million users.

Meanwhile, money spent on mobile internet has gone up from 45% last year to 54% this year.

Country wise, China tops the list of internet users globally with 641,601,070 users followed by US with 279,834,232 users and India: 243,598,922.
