New Governors to replace UPA appointees

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government is contemplating to replace Governors appointed by the previous government. Reports say the newly-formed government is mulling changing the Governors in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and West Bengal.

At present, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, B L Joshi, Ram Naresh Yadav, M K Narayanan and Shivraj Patil are Governors of Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Punjab respectively. 

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has reportedly sought details of the tenures of at least eight Governors who are due to retire by the year-end.

Besides BJP senior leader MM Joshi, others like Lalji Tandon, Kesri Nath Tripathi, V K Malhotra, Kalyan Singh, Shanta Kumar and B C Khanduri, who didn’t get any Cabinet post, are said to be in the race for the Governor’s post. 

Meanwhile, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said the incumbent Governors should have resigned themselves as most of them were appointed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and not on merit. 

The NDA Government is unlikely to replace the Governors who are scheduled to retire in next few months. 

As per reports, M M Joshi may be appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra and Jaswant Singh, who contested the General Elections as an Independent candidate from Barmer, may be appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
