Tibet not seeking independence: Dalai Lama

Date:

Shillong: The Dalai Lama has said Tibet is not seeking independence from China, but only wants the region to preserve its culture, “Tibet must remain with China for economic development but the Chinese government must respect Tibet’s unique language, script, culture, and ecology. These must be preserved”. Adding, it would be mutually beneficial to both nations if the Buddhist region remained a part of the People’s Republic of China.

While speaking of India he said, “There are many corrupt people, and I think, the corrupt people are also highly educated. They pray to God but the purpose of their prayer is to make their corrupt life more successful”.

The Lama is on his first visit to India’s North Eastern state of Meghalaya. While addressing the sixth convocation ceremony of the Martin Christian Luther University in Shillong he asked China to learn from India on how a diverse people can live together, “In western countries, secularism means being negative towards religion while in India it means respect of all religions, and India can promote religious harmony and ‘ahimsa’.
