All 193 countries recognised by the UN are on the planet Earth. Is there one beyond the planet? The answer is yes and the country is called Asgardia. It announced the first “head of nation”- Igor Ashurbeyli – on Tuesday.
“Asgardia is a fully-fledged and independent nation, and a future member of the United Nations – with all the attributes this status entails: a government and embassies, a flag, a national anthem and insignia, and so on” says Igor Ashurbeyli, the founder of the Aerospace International Research Centre, who proposed the concept in 2016.
What is Asgardia?

- It is a proposed nation with an adopted constitution
- It is the first ever space nation- a global, unifying and humanitarian project.
- Asgardia was created with three main goals in mind. First, to ensure the peaceful use of space, second to protect the Earth from space hazards and third, to create a demilitarized and free scientific base of knowledge in space.
- Many people from various countries have signed up for the citizenship of Asgardia. The is a growing nation with 212,390 residents and 203,760 citizens.
- Anyone who is 18 years and above and has accepted that he/she can potentially be chosen for a government role can become a member of Asgardia.
- The purpose of Asgardia is to create a space arena for the scientific creativity of its citizens and companies. They will develop a broad range of future space technologies, products and services for humans on Earth and Space.
