UPA II may bring ordinance to pole vault anti-graft Bills

Date:

New Delhi: Determined to showcase that Congress means business in fighting corruption, Rahul Gandhi hinted at the possibility of UPA government seeking the ordinance route to bring to effect five of the six pending Bills.

“Those in the opposition said they are against corruption. But when the time came to pass the Bills, they did not support,” he said.

“I have heard what you are saying about the Ordinance. I have already had discussions with the leaders in my party and we are going to try and see that we can manage that,” he added.

Under intense pressure from Rahul Gandhi, the UPA government is likely to approach the President.

According to the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI), Rahul assured them that he would ensure Grievances Redressal Bill, Disability Bill and Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocity (Amendment) Bill were promulgated as ordinances.

On Friday, the Rajya Sabha passed the Whistle Blowers Protection Bill, which provides for protection of whistle blowers. The Bill was approved by the Cabinet of India in 2011. It was passed by the Lok Sabha on December 27, 2011.

The pending Bills are the Public Procurement Bill, the Prevention of Corruption Act (amendment) Bill, the Prevention of Bribery of Foreign Public Officials and Officials of Public International Organisations Bill, the Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill, and the Right of Citizens to Time-bound Delivery of Goods and Services and Redressal of their Grievances Bill.
