India’s dangerous skyscrapers: Here’s what to do in case of a fire

Date:

There has been a steep rise in the constructions of buildings in India. As a result, fire in residential buildings, particularly high rise buildings has become more complex and sometimes even resulting in many deaths and huge property losses.

With several incidents of fire being reported from different parts of the country, here are some quick tips about what you should do in case of fire:

Don’t panic

The first sign of a fire is typically a blaring alarm system. But once you see or smell smoke, you should immediately call 101 and tell the operator at the fire station where you are in the building.

Due to the massive size of a high-rise building, this will help firefighters locate you more quickly and will help them determine .

Decide if it’s safer to stay or go

If you decide to stay:

Take this decision only if there is a no clear way to go out. Place wet towels under your doors and cover your vents to limit smoke coming in. Then wait for first responders.

If you decide to leave:

Don’t commit the mistake of going to the roof or use the elevators. Don’t break a window either and definitely don’t try to jump. These methods of escape could be dangerous and even deadly.

This is important in case you leave your apartment and quickly find your hallway or stairs blocked. You might have to turn back.
