Ex-Supreme Court judge PC Ghose likely to be India’s first Lokpal: Reports

Date:

Retired Supreme Court judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose is likely to become India’s first Lokpal or anti-corruption watchdog, reports said. PC Ghose was appointed the country first’s Lokpal after the Supreme Court set a deadline for the government.

His name was finalised and recommended in a Selection Committee meeting comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, and eminent jurist Mukul Rohatgi.

The leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress member, who is part of the committee, did not attend the meeting. The official announcement is likely to be made early next week.

Lokpal is a three-member, anti-corruption watchdog comprising a chairman, a judicial and non-judicial member. The members of the Lokpal will include eight members – former High Court judges and civil servants.

PC Ghose’s name was selected in one of the earlier meetings by the Lokpal Search Committee.

PC Ghose retired in May 2017 and is presently a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The former Supreme Court judge had convicted Sasikala in the Jayalalithaa disproportionate assets case.
