Water level drops drastically in Varanasi, Ganga endangered

As water level dropped drastically and tonnes of pollution came to the surface, experts sent out a red signal that the existence of the holiest river, Ganga is endangered in the holy city of Varanasi.

 

With water levels dropping to a drastic low, the river is drying up quickly and could end up dead if nothing is done.

Experts have pointed out several contributory factors that have led to the doom of the river.

“The plight of the Ganga has left people disappointed even after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to cure the river,” said Hira Nand Pandey, Purohit Dashashwamedh Ghat Varanasi.

“Due to shortage of water, Ganga’s pollution has come to the surface. This season it has  remained less than 400 meters deep,” he added.

In view of this exigency, DM Varanasi, Yogeshwar Ram Mishra, has written to the Chief Secretary, Uttar Pradesh to release water from Naraura Dam or Kanpur Barrage.

Mishra has released a statement saying, “The water level of Ganga in Varanasi has gone down. We have requested for letting off water from Kanpur Dehat. The authorities have taken this in cognizance and they are doing what is needed.”
