Assam handloom products soon to be marketed globally

On Friday, the Assam government said that it will enact a new textile policy in the near future for the marketing of Assam handloom products in the global market.

An official release said, “Government of Assam will soon formulate a textile policy for giving a major fillip to handloom and textile sector in the state.’’ The policy will focus on integrating production and promotion of handloom and textile products so as to empower weavers and making a niche for handicrafts of the state in the world market.

“Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, directed this while reviewing the activities of the handloom and textile department today. He also directed the department to set up to a state of the art emporium showcasing unique and attractive fabrics of all communities of the state shortly,’’ the statement said.

Sonowal has asked the officials to formulate strategies to project the handloom products of the state at the India-International textile Summit, 2017 that is to be held in Gujrat.  The summit is to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Twenty eight countries including China, The US, The UK, Australia, Germany, and Sweden and so on will be participating.

Sonowal advised the department to devise strategies to empower the rural sector and motivate the young entrepreneurs to take up the trade. She further advocated planning for a chain-linked exhibition system covering all districts of Assam for proper marketing of the handicrafts, the release added.
