Imphal: A private school teacher in Imphal was brutally beaten up and hospitalised after he allegedly caned a student as punishment.
On Tuesday, the computer teacher at the St Joseph’s School allegedly caned a Class 6 student in front of the entire classroom.
The student then complained to the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DSAM) about the incident following which the teacher was summoned to its office later that day and was allegedly assaulted by its members.
Sixteen members of DSAM – a body that claims to represent the interests of school students across the state – have been detained by the police in connection with the act.
The beating was so severe that the teacher had to be taken to a hospital. He has suffered bruises all over his body. Doctors said, he is recovering and will take a few more days to get discharged.
The students’ group claimed they got into a minor altercation with the teacher after he refused to apologise for beating the child. The teacher also claimed his punishment was mild, and added he did not intend to hurt the child.
