Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has entered into a research partnership with the US-based National Academy of Sciences (NAS), Washington, DC, to strengthen international cooperation in climate and environmental sciences.
The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will bring researchers from the United States to IIT Kanpur for joint scientific projects and knowledge exchange.
The agreement was signed under the Global Climate and Environmental Research Fellowship Program (GCERF) during an IIT Kanpur delegation’s visit to the United States in September 2026.
Under the arrangement, the institute will host up to two US-based researchers for a maximum period of six months. The fellows will work alongside IIT Kanpur scientists on ongoing research initiatives, gaining practical research experience while contributing their expertise to collaborative projects.
The Indian delegation was headed by IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal. Other members included Deputy Director Braj Bhushan, Institute Chair Professor Vinod Kumar Singh, Dean of International Relations Bushra Ateeq, and Dean of Resources and Alumni Amey Karkare.
The agreement was concluded in the presence of National Academy of Engineering President Tsu-Jae Liu and National Academies Executive Officer Greg Symmes.
The GCERF initiative seeks to connect American researchers with international institutions working on climate and environmental challenges. It aims to strengthen scientific cooperation, encourage cross-border expertise sharing and expand research capabilities.
The IIT Kanpur-NAS partnership is expected to support joint scientific exchanges, develop practical data-driven tools for environmental sustainability and establish a foundation for sustained bilateral research cooperation.
The initiative also seeks to contribute to global scientific capacity in addressing climate-related challenges through institutional partnerships.
