High on confidence, India look to fire the first salvo in ODI series at ‘home’

Date:

India are sensing their chance to end a massive jinx at Kingsmead, Durban today. At a venue, that can be ‘home’ for Virat Kohli’s team due to the presence of a huge expat population, India are backing themselves to fire the first salvo as the six-match ODI series begins. With a victory in the last Test match, the momentum is with them as well.

History does not side with India but this Indian team loves to take every day as a new opportunity. It was evident in the third cricket Test at the treacherous Wanderers that a wounded India fought and won against South Africa in four days. Such victories instil self-belief and confidence and Kohli wants to bank on these tow valuable ingredients in India’s bid to become the No. 1 team in 50-overs cricket in the world.

The Durban wicket is not one that is tailormade for the quicks. There is scope for spinners and Kohli could opt for his young options in Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. With limited ODI matches scheduled in 2018, India’s preparation for the 2019 World Cup also starts at Durban.

It is the balance of the South African side, a bowling attack that relies on consistency and pace, athletic fielding as well as a mix of pitches that has made things difficult not just for India but for every Asian side touring this part of the southern hemisphere. The absence of an injured AB De Villiers.
