Mumbai: Karan Johar’s romantic drama, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, made its debut in 2006. Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji, who played a crucial role in the film that explored themes of marital infidelity and strained relationships, recently opened up about the impact of the movie. According to Rani, the film played a crucial role in causing multiple divorces, serving as an eye-opener for the audience and leaving a deep impression on them.
In a recent Masterclass at the 54th International Film Festival of India in Goa, Rani Mukerji spoke about the aftermath of her movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. According to Rani, the movie set off substantial consequences, as she said, “I think what happened with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was that, after the film, there were a lot of divorces.”
She admitted that the film stirred extreme unease among viewers, hinting that it served as a eye-opener for many and, in the end, motivated some to pursue a path towards finding happiness in their lives.
When talking about her character Maya and the dynamics of her relationships with Abhishek Bachchan’s Rishi and Shah Rukh Khan’s Dev, Rani said, “What is beautiful about Maya’s character is that she loved Rishi in a different capacity and as a friend. What she found in Shah Rukh’s character was the romance she was always looking for.”
Rani Mukerji spoke about the importance of addressing a woman’s desires and choices. She also added that the lack of physical harm from a husband doesn’t necessarily mean “he is good in bed or you are in love with him.” She said the society frequently overlooks asking women about their attraction towards a partner.
Praising director Karan Johar’s courage in creating a movie like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, particularly during a period of uncertainty, Rani spoke about the importance of championing bold films and portrayals, “But in the history of Indian cinema, it will always be remembered as a film which is always ahead of its time,” she said.
