Mumbai:Â The usually calm and composed Deepika Padukone has come up in arms against a leading daily which had apparently published a rather demeaning piece of news about her dressing at an event.
The ‘Chennai Express’ star took to Twitter to show her anger by posting a screenshot of the offending photo which was captioned in the news story as “OMG: Deepika Padukone’s cleavage show.â€
The incensed star, usually a social media abstainer, made her displeasure clear in a series of tweets: “Yes! I am a woman. I have breasts and a cleavage! You got a problem!!??” Padukone tweeted Sunday afternoon, taking on the ‘news’ post.
“Don’t talk about women’s empowerment when you don’t know how to respect women!” she added as a rejoinder.
Her tweets created quite a storm. Her three back-to-back tweets had over 1,500 re-tweets in less than an hour. Deepika instantly found support from many quartets across the micro-blogging site, with Bollywood colleagues and fans rushing to condemn the photograph and accompanying article.
“We have hit a new low today…forget complimenting a woman have the ability to respect a woman first…,†tweeted Arjun Kapoor.
“Appalled….shocked and disgusted at the level of disrespect shown..Deepika or any women in the world cannot and should not stand for this!!†said Karan Johar. Priyanka Chopra also tweeted, “Well done @deepikapadukone ! Taken a stand for all of us. Xoxo.â€
However, the news organisation later tweeted: “It’s a compliment! You look so great that we want to make sure everyone knew! :)”
Deepika Padukone had worn a low cut dress designed by Anaita Shroff Adajania for the trailer of launch of ‘Chennai Express’ last year. This dress had come under the daily’s scanner for the low cut design. The daily, on Sunday morning, reframed and retweeted the photo-story.
When Deepika got to read the tweet followed by a picture gallery of similar dressing faux-pas, she lost her calm and gave the news portal a befitting reply.
