Top romantic films for a lazy weekend at home

1. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961): Starring George Peppard and Audrey Hebburn. The film’s about a lonely, struggling writer Paul Varjak (Peppard) who becomes enchanted with his neighbour: an independent, eccentric young woman Holly Golightly (Hebburn) who strives to be a high-climbing socialite with a penchant for high-fashion and wild parties. But soon he uncovers the vulnerability she has at heart.

2. Sleepless in Seattle (1993): A recently-widowed man’s (Tom Hanks) son Jonah calls a radio talk show in an attempt to find his father a partner. Jonah persuades Sam (Hanks) to go on the air, hundreds of women from around the country hear the program and write to Sam. One of the listeners is Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) who writes a letter suggesting that Sam meet her on top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day.

3. Casablanca (1942): Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in a Timeless Romance, set during World War II, focuses on a man torn between, love and virtue. Rick Blaine (Bogart) must choose between his love for Ilsa Lund (Bergman) and helping her Czech Resistance leader husband escape the Vicky-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.

4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004): An unconventional love story about an estranged couple. Joel (Jim Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had the memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process, to have Clementine removed from his own memory. But as Joel’s memories progressively begin to disappear, he discovers their earlier passion. From deep within the recesses of his brain, Joel attempts to escape the procedure.

5. Romeo and Juliet (1996): An American-Australian film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Stars Leonardo Di Caprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet. The film is an abridged modernization of Shakespeare’s play, retaining its original dialogue, the Montagues and the Capulets are represented as warring business empires and swords are replaced by guns. Shakespeare’s famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of Verona.

6. 50 First Dates (2004): The film stars Adam Sandler as a woman-chasing veterinarian and Drew Barrymore with a memory impairment similar to short term memory loss. Henry Roth (Sandler) is a man afraid of commitment until he meets Lucy (Barrymore) at the picturesque island of Oahu. They hit it off and Henry thinks he’s finally found the girl of his dreams, until he discovers her memory loss which makes her forget him the very next day. Henry then sets up different ways, each day, to meet Lucy and remind her of him.
