Andhra Pradesh tops Ease of Doing Business in India; Delhi lags

Date:

If you want to conduct business in India then head to Andhra Pradesh followed by it’s neighbour Telangana, which is also the youngest state in the country. These two states top the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ index according to the government.

The ranking is based on the Ease of Doing Business report 2016-2017, released by the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), under the commerce and industry ministry.

Not surprisingly Haryana, which is home to Gurugram stood third followed by Jharkhand, and Gujarat, in the third edition of the annual rankings announced on Tuesday. Haryana and Jharkhand have moved up three slots each, to be ranked third and fourth in the state rankings, while Gujarat slid two slots to the fifth position.

Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Karnataka, Rajasthan and West Bengal (WB) were in the Top 10 in the rankings.

Meghalaya was ranked last at 36th position as the worst performing state, while Delhi slipped four slots from the 19 to 23, with a score of 32%.

States were ranked on how well they implemented 405 business reforms initiatives identified by the centre and the feedback from businesses.

“This time we have taken feedback from industry to see whether the reforms are percolated to the ground level,” Ramesh Abhishek, secretary of the department of industrial policy and promotion said. Next year, he said, states would only be evaluated based on feedback from the industry.

Uttar Pradesh (93 %), Bihar (82%) and militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir (33%) scored better than Delhi.

“WE’VE DONE IT AGAIN! Andhra Pradesh is No. 1 in Ease of Doing Business. Reason why some of the best companies in the world are looking here to invest!! Kudos to @NCBN (CM N Chandra Babu Naidu),” the state’s Minister of Information and Technology Lokesh Nara tweeted.

The ranks are published with the intention of inculcating positive competition among states to better themselves for business and to attract investments.

Globally, India’s ranked 100 among 190 nations in the latest Doing Business report of the World Bank. The government is striving to be among the top 50 countries in the overall ease of doing business rankings.
