Centre Bans 35 WhatsApp Groups To Counter Spread Of Fake News On Agnipath Scheme

Date:

New Delhi: The Central government on Sunday banned 35 WhatsApp groups that were using the platform to share fake news and rumours related to Agnipath Scheme launched by the Defence Ministry.

According to government sources, the action was taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) amid reports that WhatsApp was being used for mobilizing protests in states like Bihar which grew more virulent on June 17th when a mob-led attack was carried out on Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi’s house along with damage to trains.

To counter the spread of fake news, the Bihar government earlier suspended the Internet service on June 17th in 12 districts across the state.

Earlier today, Army officials clarified that the Agnipath Scheme will not be rolled back and asked protesters to “stop wasting time” and prepare for Agnipath. The official also said that a written pledge will be sought from candidates and whosoever is involved in violence and arson will not be allowed to apply for forces.
