Government Lists 18 Bills For Winter Session Of Parliament

Date:

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday listed 18 bills, for the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament. These include plans to extend the Women’s Reservation Act to cover Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry, along with three bills aimed at replacing criminal laws.

As per a statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the government intends to introduce a bill aiming to raise the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly’s capacity from 107 to 114. This move is aimed at ensuring representation for Kashmiri migrants, displaced individuals from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Scheduled Tribes.

Apart from the bills under consideration, the government has detailed the first batch of supplementary demands for grants for the year 2023-24 for presentation, discussion and voting during the session.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi has called for an all-party meeting slated for December 2 on behalf of the government.

The Winter Session of Parliament begins on December 4 and continues till December 22.

The Women’s Reservation Bill received approval from President Droupadi Murmu in September, as per a notification from the law ministry. The objective of the bill is to secure a 33% reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

The bill was officially introduced in the Lok Sabha on September 12, 1996, by the UPA government. Over the past 27 years, it has been awaiting approval from the Parliament.
