New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday called for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls and raising concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission.
Addressing an INDIA bloc event in New Delhi, Kharge listed six charges against the CEC. These included alleged centralisation of electoral rolls, changes to Form 6 without parliamentary approval, the deletion of voters’ names and the sidelining of the other two Election Commissioners. He also alleged that the CEC had acted in favour of the ruling establishment.
Opposition Lists Three Demands
Kharge called for Kumar’s removal, an end to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and changes to the 2023 law governing the appointment and protection of Election Commissioners. He also raised concerns over the alleged deletion of 13.2 crore voters, a figure cited by the opposition.
The allegations have been made by the INDIA bloc and were not independently established.
INDIA Bloc Plans March
The event, described by opposition leaders as a “public impeachment” programme, was chaired by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
The INDIA bloc also announced a ‘Save Votes, Save the Nation’ march and rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, as part of its campaign over electoral roll revision and alleged irregularities.
