Now You Can Become An Engineer Without Studying Maths/Physics or Chemistry In High School

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), in its approval handbook for 2021-2022, has made Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects optional for admission to undergraduate engineering courses like BE, B.Tech.

The revised rules have been announced in AICTE’s recently-released Approval Process Handbook 2020-2021. According to the new regulation, students have to pass 10+2 with any three of the following subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Information, Technology, Biology, Informatics Practices, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational subject, Agriculture, Engineering, Graphics, Business Studies, Entrepreneurship.

The new move will allow students from diverse backgrounds to take up engineering.

“The Universities will offer suitable bridge courses such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering drawing, etc., for the students coming from diverse backgrounds to achieve desired learning outcomes of the programme,” mentions the handbook.

The candidates belonging to unreserved category will have to score a minimum of 45 per cent marks in Class 12 in the above subjects taken together. Reserved category students will be required to score a minimum of 40 per cent marks.

AICTE said that this move is being taken in line with the National Education Policy to bring flexibility in the eligibility criteria.

Till now, admission to engineering courses was done on the basis of Class 12-level Maths and Physics subjects along with one of the Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Biology/Technical Vocational subjects.
