PM Modi’s Birthday Greetings To Dalai Lama Must Be Seen In Overall Context: MEA

New Delhi: The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Thursday slammed criticism towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for wishing Dalai Lama on his birthday.

The MEA spokesperson said that “PM Modi did speak with the Dalai Lama last year also, it has been a consistent policy of our government to treat him as a guest in India. He has large followers in the country. His birthday is celebrated in India and across.”

Earlier this week, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out raids on Chinese mobile company Vivo at several offices across the country. The MEA spokesperson said that “Our legal authorities are taking steps as per law of the land.”

On reports of the Vivo Board of Directors fleeing away from India to China, he added that no such information has been provided by the authorities and India has a system of “mutual assistance”.

The MEA spokesperson confirmed that India is keeping a close watch on the developing political scenarios in the United Kingdom. He added that “PM Modi and PM Johnson enjoyed a close friendship. We have a multi-faceted partnership with the UK and we hope this will continue.”

On the issue of India and China border dispute, he assured early resolution of all the pending issues and to maintain the protocol set by the two ministers. He reiterated the need to sustain momentum to complete disengagement to restore peace & tranquility.
