SC defers pleas seeking removal of Shaheen Bagh protesters, hearing on Feb 10

Date:

The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned pleas seeking removal of anti-citizenship law protesters from Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, saying it will hear pleas after Delhi Assembly elections on February 10.

A two-judge bench comprising justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph said, “That is exactly why we are saying ‘come on Monday’. Why should we influence it (the election)? We understand the problem and we have to see how to resolve it. We will take it up on Monday. We will be in a better position by then.”

The petitions, filed by Advocate Amit Sahni and BJP leader Nand Kishore Garg, say that the road closure at Shaheen bagh causes great inconvenience to the public at large.

The road closure and the consequent traffic diversion have led to the wastage of precious time, energy and fuel, besides overburdening the DND, Akshardham and Ashram routes.

Earlier on January 14, the Delhi high court refused to pass any order on the matter, saying it is the responsibility of the police to maintain law and order.

It added that the court cannot issue directions to the police on how to handle agitation, protest or traffic at the place of protest.

A 24/7 protest, led by women, has been underway at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and a nation-wide implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) since December 15 last year.
