SC seeks Centre’s response within 3 weeks on framing guidelines against social media misuse

Date:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought Centre’s affidavit within three weeks for giving a definite timeline to framing statutory guidelines to curb misuse of social media.

The apex court also said that the misuse of the medium has become ‘very dangerous’.

It also said, “We can’t get away by saying that we don’t have a technology to track originators of online crime, if there is a technology to do it, then there is a technology to stop it.”

The apex court also asked the Centre to form a policy on the use of social media, in a plea seeking to link Aadhaar with social media accounts.

A bench comprising justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose expressed serious concern over some social media platforms not being able to trace the originator of a message or an online content and said the government must step in now.

“It is for the government to come up with appropriate guidelines to deal with these issues,” the court said according to PTI.
