Uttarakhand Assembly Passes UCC Bill; Becomes India’s First State To Implement Uniform Civil Code

Date:

New Delhi: A day after Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, the state Assembly approved it on Wednesday. With this approval, Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to enforce a Uniform Civil Code, providing a common legal framework for marriage, divorce, and inheritance of property.

The UCC Bill, now set to become an Act, is based on the draft submitted by a high-level committee appointed by the Uttarakhand government, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana P Desai.

The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand precedes the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Reports suggest that the Union Government is considering a similar law at the national level, and BJP-ruled states like Gujarat and Assam are already in the process of passing UCC laws in their respective regions.
