Fact Check: 2013 Clip Of Sinking Ship Falsely Linked To Recent Houthi Attack On UK Vessel

Date:

On February 18, the Yemeni rebel group, Houthi, targeted the UK bulk-carrier vessel, Rubymar, in the Gulf of Aden. The crew had to leave after the group struck the vessel with two missiles. Against this backdrop, a viral video claiming to show the attack on Rubymar is doing the rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the post with the following caption: Houthis launched attacks on three transport ships, resulting in one sinking. A video has surfaced showing the sinking of the British bulk carrier Rubymar, targeted by Houthis earlier today. #Houthis #shippingattack #RubyMar

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team identified a TikTok video on an unverified account, dated December 4, 2012. As per the description, it’s the sinking MV Atlantik Confidence bulk carrier. And the clip matches with the viral post. Given that it has been online since 2013, it cannot be linked to the recent Houthi attack on the British Carrier.

Searching further, we came across an article in HABER TS — a Turkish media organisation, dated May 10, 2013. The image in the article matches with one of the keyframes, confirming that the ship is MV Atlantik Confidence, owned by the Atlantic Maritime Company, which sank 138 miles off Oman’s Masirah Island on April 4, 2013, as a result of a fire on the ship on March 30, 2013.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show the Houthi attack on the UK cargo vessel Rubymar in the Gulf of Aden, is false.
